Whenever you're about to save a document by means of the Save As… dialog box
you can now use ClickSaveAs… in order to speed up the replacing of an existing file.
You can do this by locating the name of the file you want to replace in the vertically
scrolling file list just above the edit text field that usually receives the name of the
file you wish to save. Once you find the name of the file you wish to replace, hold down
the option, the control or the command () key (or any combination of those keys that you can set) and click the mouse button. Your selection will appear in the file name edit text area below the list. At this point you can edit the name or hit the Save button in order to replace the file. This avoids the aggravation of trying to match a file name completely only to have been off by a character or a space, then having to go and find the file you intended to replace and the copy you just made and having to rename the file and then throw out the original.

A ClickSaveAs… user has noticed that when the command () key was set as the only modifier, that simply clicking in the list also sets the file name edit text field. I must admit that there was a minor bug in the code which I have fixed for this version. Please use this version and discard ClickSaveAs... 1.0. My apologies for any inconvenience you have endured.

ClickSaveAs… can run on any Macintosh using MacOS version 7.0 or above.
-------- Installation
To install ClickSaveAs…, drag it to you're closed System Folder or alternately
place it inside your Control Panels folder. Then restart your Macintosh.
To turn off ClickSaveAs… at launch time hold down the shift key. Continue to hold it down even if you don't see Extensions off in the start up splash screen. An X will be drawn through the ClickSaveAs… icon.
If you tire of ClickSaveAs…, you can turn it off, you can drag it out of your Control Panels folder to deactivate it on the next restart or you may toss it in the trash and forget about the easy way of replacing files from a Save As… dialog box for all time.

You can switch ClickSaveAs… on and off.
You can select a combination of modifier keys to use when you click in the file list.
-------- How it works
ClickSaveAs… watches for calls to SFPutFile, SFPPutFile and CustomPutFile (aka the Save As… dialog box). It then looks for clicks in the file list and passes on the information to the file name field. It doesn't do anything unless you are saving a file through the Save As… dialog. It only takes up 3K of System Heap. It is 68K code but it runs on Power Macs.
It's worked on every application I've got access to. Please let me know if you find one it does not work with.
Also, if you click on an alias that cannot be resolved then the file name is set to "" and that is true if you click on a list item that represents a file server as well. You shouldn't be trying to replace those items anyway.

ClickSaveAs… has the following pricing.
Single user licenses, $5.00 per user. Volume discounts kick in at over 20 users ($4.00 each) and 50 users ($3.00 each). A Site License costs $160.00 (equal to 40 users) and covers all locations for your organization within a 160 kilometer radius of your site (100 miles). One big advantage of a Site License is that you do not need to keep track of how many people at your site are using the software. A World-Wide License costs $750.00 and it covers all locations for your organization around the world.
Paying for ClickSaveAs… is fairly simple. Open the Register program
that accompanies ClickSaveAs…. Enter your name, your e-mail address,
and the number of single user licenses you desire (or Site or Word-Wide licenses). Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register program and send the data and payment to Kagi Shareware. More specifics on the Register program to follow. Kagi Shareware handles my payment processing.
If paying with Credit Card or First Virtual, you can e-mail or fax the data to Kagi Shareware. Their e-mail address is shareware@kagi.com and their fax number is +1 510 652-6589. You can either Copy the data from Register and paste into the body of an e-mail message or you can Save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an e-mail message. There is no need to compress the data file, it's already pretty small. If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi fax number.
Payments sent via e-mail are processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an e-mail acknowledgement when it is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you provide a correct internet e-mail address you will receive an e-mail acknowledgement.

I was born in England in 1965. I moved to Barbados where I grew up until the age of 16 and then I came to Canada where I presently reside. I'm married and live with my beautiful wife in a tall apartment building in Mississauga, Ontario. I'm a graduate of Mohawk College's Computer Systems Technology course and have also attended Hamilton's McMaster University for a couple of years. I guess I was supposed to pursue a study of Medicine but I'm too easily freaked by blood and guts. Computer Science is much more civilised and fun at that.
Presently, I am an employed as a Macintosh Programmer. I'm having a blast.
I've owned a Macintosh since the summer of 1984. From the beginning I've been interested in programming them. My very first computer was a Texas Instruments TI-99/4A™. Remember those?
